”The Tempest Society” (Stormens samhälle) inleder Bouchra Khalilis verkserie om MTA (Mouvement des Travailleurs Arabes), den arabiska arbetarrörelsen i Frankrike. Denna bortglömda självständiga pionjärrörelse var verksam 1973–1978 och bildades av arabiska migrantarbetare tillsammans med franska studenter. MTA startade två teatergrupper, Al Assifa (Stormen) och Al Halaka (Cirkeln), som använde teater och performance för att verka för lika rättigheter.

I filmen möter vi tre unga atenare – Isavella, Elias och Giannis – på en tom teater. De tar sig namnet ”The Tempest Society”, som en hyllning till Al Assifa. Al Assifa uppförde på teatrar och offentliga platser scener som handlade om förtryck och kampen mot ojämlikhet.

I efterdyningarna av den ekonomiska krisen år 2016 i Grekland utforskar Isavella, Elias och Giannis Al Assifas historia och reaktiverar gruppens metoder och strategier i relation till sina egna erfarenheter och till migranters villkor i dagens Grekland. Vem är medborgare? Vem bär vittnesbörd om vår historia? Hur kan vi skapa möjlighet för förändring mot ett mer jämlikt samhälle?

Filmen ”The Tempest Society” producerades 2017 för documenta 14 i Aten/Kassel, och visades för första gången i Aten.

”The Tempest Society” inaugurates Bouchra Khalili’s series of works devoted to the MTA (Mouvement des Travailleurs Arabes) – the Arab Workers’ Movement in France. Founded by Arab migrant workers and French students, this forgotten pioneering autonomous organization was active between 1973 and 1978. MTA established two theatre groups, Al Assifa (The Tempest) and Al Halaka (The Circle), and used theatre and performance to advocate for equal rights. Fifty years later, The Tempest Society resurrects the history of the MTA and examines its current relevance in contemporary Europe. 

In the film, three young Athenians – Isavella, Elias and Giannis – appear in an empty theatre, and name themselves ”The Tempest Society” as a tribute to Al Assifa who, through performances in theatres and public spaces, staged scenes of oppression and resistance to inequality.   

In the aftermath of Greece’s economic crisis in 2016, Isavella, Elias and Giannis explore the history of Al Assifa and reactivate its methods and theatrical strategies in relation to their own positions and to the conditions of migrants in contemporary Greece. Who is a citizen? Who bears witness to our history? How can we create the possibility for change towards a community of equals? 

The film ”The Tempest Society” was produced in 2017 for documenta 14 (Athens/Kassel) and premiered in Athens.
