Glömskans arkiv: Film screening & talk: Legal forum on hate crimes
at –
During the work with Glömskans arkiv (The Archive of Forgetting), Amfi organized a Legal Forum on hate crimes in collaboration with Civil Right Defenders in the fall of 2022. The purpose of the forum was to examine the rules and limits that the law sets in relation to racist violence. The legal forum was filmed and we are now showing an excerpt followed by a conversation with Malcolm Jallow, Member of Parliament (V), Kamal Masri, who was one of serial killer Peter Mang’s victims, and journalist Shora Esmailian. The programme is in Swedish.
During the forum, a review was made of the rule on increasing penalties due to hate crimes and whether hate crimes are invoked to the extent that demands can be made in Swedish courts today. Representatives from the various bodies of the judiciary participated. The police agency, the prosecutor’s office, lawyers and the judiciary were represented by Mikael Westerlund (lawyer), Petra Stenkula (police chief in Malmö), Thed Adelswärd (judge) and Mathias Larsson (prosecutor at the South Skåne Public Prosecutor’s Chamber). Stellan Gärde, chairman of the Swedish branch of the International Commission of Jurists, held the meeting. Civil Rights Defenders opened and closed the forum with speeches by lawyers Abdirahman Mohamud Hassan and Jenny Nguyen.
On May 7, an excerpt from the film that documented the legal forum will be shown. The film screening will be followed by a conversation with Malcolm Jallow, member of parliament (V) and chairman of the Afrosvenskarnas forum för rättvisa (The Afro-Swedish Forum for Justice), Kamal Masri, who was one of serial killer Peter Mang’s victims, and journalist Shora Esmailian.
