Hakawati: Meet the storyteller Said Hamrit

Hakawati: Meet the storyteller Said Hamrit
at –
Inspired by Bouchra Khalili’s themes of migration, identity, and life stories, Malmö Konsthall and the Swedish-Algerian Association invite you to a Hakawati tour with Said Hamrit.
In Morocco, Al Halaqa has existed for several hundred years, and the tradition encompasses the different meanings of the Arabic word halaqa: circle, ring, and gathering. The audience forms a circle around the storyteller, and the circle becomes a focal point for traditional oral storytelling. Hakawati is the Arabic word for storyteller.
Said Hamrit tells his life story – from growing up in Algeria and dreaming of university studies in Europe, to years of uncertainty as an undocumented person in several countries.
Today, Said works as a manager at a Swedish government agency. During the tour, he shares the journey that brought him from Algeria to Malmö, the challenges he has faced along the way, and how he reached where he is today.
In collaboration with ABF Malmö. Part of the Halaqa project, which is funded with support from Region Skåne.
