When hate and threats silence voices, the conditions for free expression change. This lecture offers a current picture of how freedom of expression is being challenged in practice in Sweden. Freedom of expression is among the first things to come under threat when democracies are under pressure. Although freedom of expression is formally strong in Sweden, the practical space for free expression is also being challenged here. Swedish authors, journalists, researchers and others working in publishing and public discourse are subjected to hate, threats, suspicion and pressure, risking fear, self-censorship and silence. Who is affected, and what are the consequences? And how can developments in Sweden be understood in an international context?
