Day of the Imprisoned Writer

Day of the Imprisoned Writer
at –
On Sunday, 15 November, PEN Skåne and the Swedish Comics Association invite you to the event “Comics and Censorship”, from 3 to 4 pm in Room C at Malmö Konsthall. Fredrik Strömberg will open with a short presentation on comics and censorship, followed by a conversation with comic artist Layal Safieddine.
The talk will be held in both Swedish and English.
Every year on 15 November, PEN centres around the world commemorate the Day of the Imprisoned Writer. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of the situation of imprisoned writers, to defend freedom of expression and to protest against those who seek to suppress it.
Researcher and author Fredrik Strömberg will talk about how the art form of comics has been subjected to censorship over the years, followed by a discussion with Malmö-based Swedish-Lebanese comics artist and activist Layal Safieddine. Strömberg has written several books, including “Black Images in the Comics”, “Jewish Images in the Comics” and “Comic Art Propaganda”. His doctoral thesis, “Comics and the Middle East”, was defended at Malmö University in 2022. Safieddine has published her political comics in Swedish and international anthologies, including “C’est Bon Anthology”, “Palestinaboken” and “Cartoonists for Palestine”. She is also the editor of the anti-racist comics magazine “ParaVox”.
PEN International is a non-profit association and organisation for writers that works to defend and promote freedom of expression in Sweden and internationally. Swedish PEN was founded in 1922 and is based in Stockholm. Since 2022, there has also been a PEN Skåne.
The Swedish Comics Association was founded in 1968 and is Sweden’s organisation dedicated to the art form of comics. https://serieframjandet.se/
