Vägen till skulpturen (The Path to Sculpture)

10.12.2024–12.1.2025 in the Workshop

“The Path to Sculpture” is both a resource and a method designed for the youngest preschool children, aged 1–3, to explore the city and its public art. The exhibition in Verkstan showcases the outcomes of this exploration, conducted during the autumn of 2024 across six different preschools, involving approximately 80 children.

Malmö Konsthall has developed the guide material in close collaboration with dialogue preschools. It consists of a map and instructions and is available for download on Kulturbokning for all preschools in Malmö. Educators and children select a sculpture in the preschool’s vicinity that they can visit multiple times. During these visits, the children create clay impressions and frottage (rubbings), and at the preschool, they can make their own books with images from the visits. Creative materials such as graphite crayons, clay, and paper are usually already available at the preschool.

Since the path to the sculpture becomes significant, observations and reactions can be marked on the map—what is seen and heard is acknowledged. Even if the sculpture itself is not reached, something meaningful has still been achieved. The children can participate in their own way, either by observing or actively creating with the materials.

In May and August 2024, we distributed 30 kits containing all the necessary materials to various preschools in Malmö, including during Language Week in Folkets Park. Preschools that received the materials could also register to participate in this exhibition. Six preschools, with a total of approximately 80 children, are showcasing what the children have created and sharing the processes of exploring the art in their local areas. It is evident that the materials inspire great enthusiasm and spark creative processes among both children and educators, with the exploration continuing in various forms.

Participating preschools are Almängen Preschool, Fågelbacken Montessori Preschool, Gubbabacken Preschool, Kullabäcken Preschool, Källängen Preschool, and Lekatten Preschool. A big thank you to all the participating children and educators!
