Graubner was renowned for his &#8220;cushion paintings,&#8221; large-scale works where color was not merely applied to the surface but seemed to swell outward in organic, three-dimensional forms. His work challenged conventional perceptions of painting and the role of the canvas, inviting viewers into an experience of color as living matter \u2013 almost as if it breathed and transformed.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-normal-weight\">The exhibition built on Malm\u00f6 Konsthall\u2019s earlier presentation of Graubner\u2019s art in the group exhibition &#8220;Kunstmuseum D\u00fcsseldorf Visits Malm\u00f6 Konsthall&#8221; in 1980. His piece &#8220;Sunk Cushion&#8221; (1969) drew significant attention at the time. That painting, with its balloon-like, bulging shape, both fascinated and puzzled many visitors. In the intersection of sculpture and painting, Graubner created a sense of constant movement \u2013 as if the color had a life of its own, shifting with changes in light and the passage of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>JI liberate color in the same way Paul C\u00e9zanne liberated form. My paintings contain no narrative. They do not offer an intellectual experience. What I want to convey is emotion. For example, I do not paint a tree, but the feeling of a tree growing\u2014the color-space.<\/em>&#8220;&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-body-text\">Gotthard Graubner in Sydsvenska Dagbladet, July 8, 1983<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-normal-weight\">Graubner\u2019s painting was often described as monochromatic, but closer examination revealed a wealth of tonal variations that seemed to grow, expand, and contract on the surface. His technique \u2013 using two layers of linen fabric enclosing synthetic wadding \u2013 gave his paintings a three-dimensional quality that appeared almost alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-normal-weight\">At the 1982 Venice Biennale, Graubner achieved great success with his work &#8220;Hommage \u00e0 Tintoretto&#8221;, one of the centerpiece works also featured in the Malm\u00f6 exhibition. This monumental painting, measuring four by four meters, required the roof to be opened to lift it into the Konsthall \u2013 a spectacular moment that drew photographers and reporters to Malm\u00f6.&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-style-information-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/malmokonsthall.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Gotthard_Graubner-03-667x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A huge painting is transported into the exhibition space through a skylight.
