Courtesy of\u00a0\u2018Fonds Kervahut \/ Collection Laurent\u00a0Fi\u00e9vet\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-page-margin\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-heading-article\" id=\"h-ceija-stojka\">Ceija Stojka<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-30-1-30-5-2021\">30.1\u201330.5 2021<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-information-column is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>Roma artist Ceija Stojka (1933\u20132013) was born and raised in Styria in Austria, where her family made their living as traders. Following Nazi Germany\u2019s annexation of Austria in 1938, her family was persecuted, arrested, and sent to the concentration camps. Stojka was barely ten years old when she arrived at Auschwitz. She survived three concentration camps: Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbr\u00fcck, and Bergen-Belsen. Out of her entire family of about two hundred people, only six survived: herself, her mother, and four of her siblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-en-av-de-forsta-romer-att-vittna-om-forintelsen\">One of the first Roma to testify about the Holocaust<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">It wasn\u2019t until more than forty years has passed that she finally broke her silence, and gave, as one of the first Roma women, an account of her own memories and experiences of the Holocaust. She has chronicled her childhood in several books, and in over 1,000 paintings and drawings. Her first autobiography, &#8220;Wir leben in Verborgenheit&#8221; (We Live in Seclusion) was published in 1988. She was encouraged by documentary filmmaker Karin Berger, who made two films about her. In the exhibition, an excerpt from one of these, &#8220;Unter den Bretten hellgr\u00fcnes Gras&#8221; (The Green Green Grass Beneath), which details her time at Bergen-Belsen, is shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-sjalvlard-konstnar\">Self-taught artist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Stojka was a self-taught artist, who gradually developed her own style, which incorporated bright colours and forceful expressions. She didn\u2019t paint exclusively with a brush, but also used her hands, and she did all her work in her home, either in the kitchen or in the living room. Many of her pieces incorporate writing, either directly or on the verso, thus combining word and image to produce a holistic narrative. The exhibition catalogue reflects Stojka\u2019s recurring practice of fusing image and text in her art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-europa-far-aldrig-glomma\">Europe must never forget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Around 140 drawings and paintings produced between 1990 and 2012 are featured, organised by subject. The presentation follows Ceija Stojka\u2019s life: before, during, and after the war. Stojka was motivated by a desire to tell the story of what happened to the Roma people during the Nazi regime, and constantly emphasised the importance of never forgetting or denying their story. She opposed the racism and antiziganism that continued to prevail in her native country of Austria as well as in large parts of the rest of Europe. She once said: \u201cI\u2019m afraid that Europe is forgetting its past, and that Auschwitz is only sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I&#8217;m afraid that Europe forgets its history, and that Auschwitz is just asleep<\/p>\n<cite>\/Ceija Stojka<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-style-information-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-malmo-konsthall-accordion block-accordion-container active\"><button class=\"block-accordion\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleAccordianClick(this)\" aria-controls=\"accordion_content_06734c61-4163-40a1-a26e-62411b02904e\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion_content-container_06734c61-4163-40a1-a26e-62411b02904e\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"accordion__title\">Production<\/span><svg width=\"14\" height=\"14\" viewBox=\"0 0 14 14\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"accordion__icon acc_plus\"><path d=\"M14 8H8H6H0V6H6H8H14V8Z\" fill=\"black\" class=\"stroke\"><\/path><path d=\"M6 14L6 8L6 6L6 -8.74228e-08L8 0L8 6L8 8L8 14L6 14Z\" fill=\"black\" class=\"stroke-minus\"><\/path><\/svg><\/button><div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" id=\"accordion_content_06734c61-4163-40a1-a26e-62411b02904e\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion_content-container_06734c61-4163-40a1-a26e-62411b02904e\"><div class=\"accordion__text\">\n<p>The exhibition was produced in collaboration with the Ceija Stojka International Fund, and in dialogue with Roma Information and Knowledge Center (RIKC) in Malm\u00f6. Curators: No\u00eblig Le Roux and Xavier Marchand.
