Hodell\u2019s life was driven by an attitude of unrelenting resistance. He started out writing plays, then trained as a fighter pilot and later became an artist. His career as a fighter pilot ended abruptly in 1941, when he crashed his plane in an airfield in Ska\u030ane during a training session. After a long-term hospitalisation in Lund, he began working with a children\u2019s theatre in Folkets Park in Malmo\u0308.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-en-centralgestalt-inom-det-svenska-60-tals-avantgardet\">A central figure within the Swedish 1960s avant-garde<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dadaism was an early influence in Hodell\u2019s work, in particular the collage methodology of Kurt Schwitters in which language takes on a material dimension as texts are cut up and rearranged. Hodell often used a typewriter for this purpose and a hole puncher to remove and censor material. His early collages are partially based on his experiences from the Second World War. Hodell was one of the central figures of the Swedish avant-garde in the 1960s, and one of the first Swedish practitioners of a new direction of poetry that became known as concrete poetry. He was part of artist groups such as \u2018the z-group\u2019 and Svisch, that toured nationally with happenings and exhibitions. &#13;\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-fran-automatisering-till-motstandsstrategier\">From automation to strategies for resistance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Repetition as an artistic strategy is visible throughout Hodell\u2019s practice. This approach can be traced back to his experiences of discipline at school but also to his time in the armed forces. Hodell linked the concept of repetition to the automation of mankind through information society: from the dehumanising death camps of the Nazi administration to industrialisation\u2019s automation of labour through time- pressured work and assembly lines. The trauma of the plane crash is an underlying motive that recurs frequently in various forms within Hodell\u2019s work. His artistic practice is rooted in a strong identification with revolutionary movements such as the Black Power movement and engages on a wider level with both playful and deeply serious strategies of resistance against white power, capitalism and war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-body-heading\" id=\"h-en-utstallning-i-fem-teman\">An exhibition with five themes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition A\u030ake Hodell \u2013 Motsta\u030and (Resistance) at Malmo\u0308 Konsthall is curated around five key themes; Motsta\u030and (Resistance), the fundamental element of anti-militarism and the critique of capitalism and white power movements that characterise Hodell\u2019s artistic practice. Automatisering (Automation), where repetition as working method plays a central role. Black Power, with work created in solidarity with the movement. Identifikation (Identification), where Hodell adopts the identities of deceased writers as an artistic device to high- light contemporary oppression and injustices. Finally, Do\u0308den (Death), featuring works that developed from experiences of the Second World War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-body-text\">Exhibition curator Elena Wolay has invited the artists Loulou Cherinet, Catherine Christer Hennix and Ulla Wiggen to participate in the exhibition in order to traverse dimensions of time through parallel presentations, to suggest affinities and to illustrate connections to Hodell\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-style-information-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-malmo-konsthall-accordion block-accordion-container active\"><button class=\"block-accordion\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleAccordianClick(this)\" aria-controls=\"accordion_content_fa89e577-8dff-4e80-8fe7-6c78b5d62fc8\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion_content-container_fa89e577-8dff-4e80-8fe7-6c78b5d62fc8\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"accordion__title\">Loulou Cherinet<\/span><svg width=\"14\" height=\"14\" viewBox=\"0 0 14 14\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"accordion__icon acc_plus\"><path d=\"M14 8H8H6H0V6H6H8H14V8Z\" fill=\"black\" class=\"stroke\"><\/path><path d=\"M6 14L6 8L6 6L6 -8.74228e-08L8 0L8 6L8 8L8 14L6 14Z\" fill=\"black\" class=\"stroke-minus\"><\/path><\/svg><\/button><div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" id=\"accordion_content_fa89e577-8dff-4e80-8fe7-6c78b5d62fc8\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion_content-container_fa89e577-8dff-4e80-8fe7-6c78b5d62fc8\"><div class=\"accordion__text\">\n<p>Loulou Cherinet\u00a0(born 1970) is a Swedish-Ethiopian artist working with film and video installation. Cherinet previously worked with large- scale, sculptural outdoor paintings but shifted her focus to narrative structures and multichannel video installations where montage is given spatial form. She took an early interest in electronic components and started to depict the inner workings of machines. Her paintings of electronics quickly attracted international attention and were first exhibited in the 1960s. This presentation at Malmo\u0308 Konsthall is a development of the first exhibition and has been curated by Elena Wolay.
