SUMMARY:Glömskans arkiv: Film screening & talk: Legal forum on hate crimes
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\n\n\nImage from the Legal Forum for Hate Crimes in September 2022\n\n\n\n\nGlömskans arkiv: Film screening & talk: Legal forum on hate crimes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the work with Glömskans arkiv (The Archive of Forgetting)\, Amfi organized a Legal Forum on hate crimes in collaboration with Civil Right Defenders in the fall of 2022. The purpose of the forum was to examine the rules and limits that the law sets in relation to racist violence. The legal forum was filmed and we are now showing an excerpt followed by a conversation with Malcolm Jallow\, Member of Parliament (V)\, Kamal Masri\, who was one of serial killer Peter Mang’s victims\, and journalist Shora Esmailian. The programme is in Swedish. \n\n\n\nDuring the forum\, a review was made of the rule on increasing penalties due to hate crimes and whether hate crimes are invoked to the extent that demands can be made in Swedish courts today. Representatives from the various bodies of the judiciary participated. The police agency\, the prosecutor’s office\, lawyers and the judiciary were represented by Mikael Westerlund (lawyer)\, Petra Stenkula (police chief in Malmö)\, Thed Adelswärd (judge) and Mathias Larsson (prosecutor at the South Skåne Public Prosecutor’s Chamber). Stellan Gärde\, chairman of the Swedish branch of the International Commission of Jurists\, held the meeting. Civil Rights Defenders opened and closed the forum with speeches by lawyers Abdirahman Mohamud Hassan and Jenny Nguyen. \n\n\n\nOn May 7\, an excerpt from the film that documented the legal forum will be shown. The film screening will be followed by a conversation with Malcolm Jallow\, member of parliament (V) and chairman of the Afrosvenskarnas forum för rättvisa (The Afro-Swedish Forum for Justice)\, Kamal Masri\, who was one of serial killer Peter Mang’s victims\, and journalist Shora Esmailian. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: Filmscreening & talkWhen: Sun 7.5 at 15–17Where: The exhibition space \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNo registration needed\, admission free

SUMMARY:Black (Counter)Gravity: An epilogue to FLIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\nFrida Orupabo\, Girl On Horse\, 2021. Courtesy of Frida Orupabo and Galerie Nordenhake.\n\n\nBlack (Counter)Gravity: An epilogue to FLIGHT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens when we sift through history and its dark archives? FLIGHT (Kudzanai Chiurai | Frida Orupabo | Eric Magassa) is an exhibition that grapples with history; its tensions and its freedoms. The programme evening that concludes the exhibition offers a listening session directed by the artist Santiago Mostyn\, a talk with Jonelle Twum\, Nina Cramer & Tawanda Appiah\, and a film screening of Kudzanai Chiurai’s film We Live in Silence. The evening ends with more music and a celebration of FLIGHT. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this epilogue to the exhibition\, we meet within the contentious archive. Inspired by Tina Campt’s essay contribution to the exhibition catalogue of FLIGHT\, Black (Counter)Gravity: A Soliloquy on Flight\, we attempt to unsettle the state of oblivion by bringing Black counter narratives to the surface. In this process we acknowledge the tensions that rise when we summon history. The discomfort of encountering the dead and simultaneously the potential that comes with purposeful exhumation. We propose collective responsibility in dealing with the violence that comes with the past. Black (Counter)Gravity: An epilogue to FLIGHT offers a speculative site for a multiplicity of knowledge and affects that the archive holds and offers us. \n\n\n\nThe event starts off with a listening session by the artist Santiago Mostyn\, who will select vinyls and recordings from The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember and beyond. After that we will commune for a conversation titled On Archival Experiments with Jonelle Twum\, Nina Cramer and Tawanda Appiah. From there on we will watch Kudzanai Chiurai’s film We Live in Silence: Chapters 1-7 (2017). The evening will end with more music and a celebration of FLIGHT. \n\n\n\nThe programme is curated and organised by Tawanda Appiah and Jonelle Twum. \n\n\n\nProgramme: \n\n\n\n18.00–18.10: Introduction by Tawanda Appiah\, Jonelle Twum & Mats Stjernstedt18.10–18.40: Listening session with Santiago Mostyn (Part I) 18.40–19.30: On Archival Experiments. Jonelle is also the founder and artistic director of Black Archives Sweden. \n\n\n\n\nSantiago Mostyn\nSantiago Mostyn (b. 1981\, San Francisco) is an artist whose practice foregrounds narrative entanglements in pursuit of new understandings of place\, both in a cultural and psychic sense. Mostyn has long been interested in the interplay of music\, narrative and the embodied self\, with works manifesting as films\, exhibitions and curatorial projects. \n\n\n\n\nNina Cramer\nNina Cramer is a PhD candidate at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Arts and Cultural Studies. Her research examines contemporary artistic practices and discourses of the African Diaspora in Denmark drawing on frameworks from Black Studies and queer feminist art history. Her PhD project is part of the research network The Art of Nordic Colonialism which brings together scholars\, curators\, and artists working on art and visual culture related to Nordic colonial projects in the Caribbean\, West Africa\, India\, Greenland\, Iceland\, and Sápmi. Since 2017 she has been a member of the decolonial feminist collective Marronage that uses a multitude of strategies to critique the ongoing effects of Danish coloniality. \n\n\n\n\nTawanda Appiah\nTawanda Appiah is a Zimbabwean curator\, writer and researcher based in Malmö\, Sweden. His research-centred practice often revisits history to make sense of the contemporary milieu. He is the incoming curator at Skånes konstförening and a part of Njelele Art Station\, and previously held the position of Curator of Education & Public Programming at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. \n\n\n\n\nFilm: We Live in Silence: Chapters 1–7\nThe work takes Mauritanian filmmaker Med Hondo’s critically acclaimed 1967 drama Soleil Ô as its starting point\, responding\, in particular\, to the colonial mindset encapsulated in the following line from the film: \n\n\n\n‘It’s crucial to be able to select individuals capable of speaking as we do\, capable of thinking as we do\, capable of retaining\, of absorbing\, yes absorbing words as we do and above all giving them the same meaning\, and so there’ll soon be millions of white-washed blacks\, white-washed and economically enslaved’. \n\n\n\nIn We Live in Silence\, Chiurai dissects the film through similitude\, recreating scenes intercut with reimagined scenes from previous video works by Chiurai (Iyeza and Moyo) to stage speculative fictions and futures that reject this notion that African migrants are to think\, speak and understand language like their colonizers.

SUMMARY:Blinking Blind: An Evening of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\n\n\nEric Magassa. Foto: Peter Claesson / Stenastiftelsen\n\n\n\nBook release: Kartritartornet by Leif Holmstrand\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe programme of the evening is based on Eric Magassa’s site-specific installation Blinking Blind in the exhibition FLIGHT. Meet journalist Rafaela Stålbalk Klose as she tells about Svarta Sara’s fate in Kalmar and listen to a concert with griot Malick Diabete on the kora. The hos and DJ of the evening is the artist Eric Magassa. \n\n\n\nBlinking Blind is a collage where Eric Magassa connects his personal story with the world history through pictures\, film and music. Magassa grew up between Sweden\, France and Senegal and both his artistic and personal identity have been shaped by these three places and what it means to navigate between them. \n\n\n\nIn Blinking Blind\, there is a portrait of Mazahr Makatemele\, who came to be known as Svarta Sara in Kalmar. Journalist Rafaela Stålbalk Klose tells about the fate of Mazahr Makatemele in a lecture where we travel through the colonial era of slave trade and exoticism\, racism and liberation. Malick Diabete\, a griot from Senegal\, gives a concert on the West African stringed instrument kora. A griot is a messenger who conveys information through song and has kept history alive and preserved for centuries by passing his songs down from generation to generation. \n\n\n\nMalmö Konsthall offers vegetarian Yassa – a traditional Senegalese dish – and restaurant SMAK’s bar is open during the evening. Eric Magassa is the host and DJ of the evening. The lecture is in Swedish.
