Photo: Courtesy of the artist.\n\n\nVernissage: Otobong Nkanga\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to the opening of Otobong Nkanga’s exhibition on Friday 9 October at 19:00. \n\n\n\nOtobong Nkanga was born in Kano (Nigeria) in 1974 and is now based in Antwerp (Belgium). In her artistic practice\, she explores issues relating to mining and the use of the earth’s resources\, as well as the body in its relationship to space and the earth. \n\n\n\n“I dreamt of you in colours”\, which is Nkanga’s first retrospective exhibition in Scandinavia\, brings together works from the 1990s up until today\, and includes a multitude of expressions. During the opening\, the artist will activate one of the works\, Solid Maneuvers (2015)\, through a performance with the same title. The work incorporates\, among other materials\, salt\, makeup and minerals\, and explores the impact of mining on the landscape and the environment. Working with drawings\, tapestries\, sculptures\, performances and much more\, she creates networks and constellations between human beings and landscapes\, highlighting the reparative capacity of natural and relational systems.  \n\n\n\nThe presentation will focus on the installations featured in “I dreamt of you in colours” at Malmö Konsthall – Otobong Nkanga’s first solo exhibition in Sweden\, which includes works from the late 1990s up until today. Graphic design: Thomas Bush.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCuratorial Imaginaries: Towards New Practices of Access and Inclusion is a two-day programme in Malmö and Ystad for curators\, artists\, educators and others working in the art field and its institutions. The programme explores work\, solidarity and the commons\, and the conditions that create participation and a sense of belonging in the arts. It includes lectures\, workshops\, exhibition visits and conversations. \n\n\n\nAt Malmö Konsthall\, the programme includes an afternoon of two lectures on 13 October\, “Practicing Solidarity” and “A Sense of Purpose”. DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n      \n  \n\nFörbjuden Kulturvecka 2026.\n\n\nConversation: Forbidden Culture – Forbidden People\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA conversation highlighting examples of how Roma life and cultural expressions have been prohibited – through Sweden’s Vagrancy Act\, the expulsion of Roma\, the exclusion of Roma by the Church\, and bans on flamenco and fortune-telling. These examples offer insight into the persecution and exclusion of Roma people\, and how traces of the Roma minority’s existence and presence have been restricted\, made invisible\, or portrayed as a threat to society. \n\n\n\nIn 1560\, Archbishop Laurentius Petri wrote a reprimanding letter to a priest who had baptised a Roma child: “I am surprised and angered by your actions\, since I have so often warned you not to associate with the evil people.” Throughout history\, Roma life has been prohibited in various ways in Sweden and across Europe. These prohibitions have taken the form of laws\, social norms\, and discourses portraying Roma as “the other”. This discourse laid the foundation for a brutal policy of assimilation that included abuses such as forced sterilisation and\, in its most extreme forms\, led to slavery and the Holocaust. \n\n\n\nWhat consequences can prohibiting a minority’s cultural expressions and way of life have for society? What is prohibited today? Photo: Josephine Thunell\n\n\nFreedom of Expression in Sweden: The Current Situation\, Threats and Consequences\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture with Hanna Nordell\, Executive Director of Swedish PEN\, on the state of freedom of expression in Sweden today\, based on PEN’s latest reports. \n\n\n\nWhen hate and threats silence voices\, the conditions for free expression change. This lecture offers a current picture of how freedom of expression is being challenged in practice in Sweden. Freedom of expression is among the first things to come under threat when democracies are under pressure. Although freedom of expression is formally strong in Sweden\, the practical space for free expression is also being challenged here. Swedish authors\, journalists\, researchers and others working in publishing and public discourse are subjected to hate\, threats\, suspicion and pressure\, risking fear\, self-censorship and silence. Who is affected\, and what are the consequences? And how can developments in Sweden be understood in an international context? \n\n\n\nThe event is part of “Forbidden Culture Week”. The evening is presented in collaboration with Musik i Syd Malmö. \n\n\n\nThe concert opens with two works for solo instruments. Andreas Brantelid performs Benjamin Britten’s deeply emotional “Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello”\, austere and melancholic\, incorporating Russian folk melodies and Orthodox church music. In contrast\, Michael Germer brings French virtuosity to Eugène Ysaÿe’s “Sonata in E minor for Solo Violin”\, one of the most demanding works in the violin repertoire. The concert then erupts into an intense dialogue in Maurice Ravel’s dense\, rhythmic “Sonata for Violin and Cello”\, which\, despite being written for just two instruments\, creates a sound world that is almost orchestral. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: ConcertWhen: Wednesday 28 October at 4:45 pmWhere: Exhibition Hall \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAdmission free\, drop in \n\n\n\nAndreas Brantelid\nSwedish-Danish cellist Andreas Brantelid (b. 1987) is one of the most sought-after cellists of his generation\, internationally acclaimed for his expressive musicianship\, in which the music does more than simply sound – it speaks\, dances and sings. He made his debut at the age of 14 with the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen and has won several major international prizes\, including the Eurovision Young Musicians competition in Vienna in 2006. Today\, he performs around the world with leading orchestras\, is a regular guest at international festivals\, and also serves as a lecturer in cello at Malmö Academy of Music. \n\n\n\n\nMichael Germer\nMichael Germer (b. 2002) is a Danish violinist regarded as one of Scandinavia’s most promising young musical talents. He made his solo debut at DR Koncerthuset in 2021 and has since won several major prizes\, including Danish Radio’s P2 Talent Award. Most recently\, he won second prize at the Singapore International Violin Competition 2026. During the 2026–2027 season\, he will perform as a soloist with symphony orchestras in Lyon\, Odense and Aalborg\, among others\, performing violin concertos by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.
