SUMMARY:Hilary Jeffery & Marcus Pal
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\nPhoto: Michael Yu\n\n\nHilary Jeffery & Marcus Pal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn their first public performance as a duo\, Hilary Jeffery and Marcus Pal present a full day of music with roots in their work with Catherine Christer Hennix in the ensemble Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. Hennix’s “inifinitary composition” Soliton(e) Star\, which is continuously sounding as part of the current exhibition\, constitutes the sonic ground state that the two musicians will gradually traverse over the course of the day. \n\n\n\nUsing trombone\, trumpet and voice in multilayered fields of long sustained tones\, precisely tuned to Soliton(e) Star according to the principles of just intonation\, the musicians will reactivate the musical and philosophical practice refined by Hennix in the context of her work with Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. Central to this practice is that the music is allowed to form over a long period of time\, and that minimal significance is attributed to how any given episode of sound begins or ends. The main focus instead lies on sonic depth and harmonic fusion in momentary attention to sound\, a focus which can lead the attentive listener all the way through the sound and out to its reverse side\, where experience gains new and mystical meaning\, entirely freed from time.   \n\n\n\nConcert format\n\n\n\nHilary Jeffery and Marcus Pal will perform repeatedly throughout the day starting at 11:00 when the exhibition space opens. The day concludes with a continuous episode of sustained tuning\, from 17:00 to 18:30\, at which point the audience is guaranteed to encounter the music in its fully activated form. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: ConcertWhen: Tuesday\, May 5\, 11:00–18:30 \n\n\n\nThe art hall and Restaurant Smak close at 19:00.Where: The art hall \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFree entry\, no registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHilary Jeffery\nHilary Jeffery (b. 1971\, Surbiton) plays\, composes and teaches music\, and specialises in brass instruments. He met CC Hennix in 2005\, when they immediately initiated the practice that became Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. They worked closely together until 2023. \n\n\n\n\nMarcus Pal\nMarcus Pal (b. 1991\, Stockholm) is a sound-artist\, composer and theorist focusing on the phenomenology of intensity\, clarity and possibility as it manifests in the perception of tones\, chords and harmony. Marcus worked closely with Hennix between 2013 and 2023.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Hennix\, Lacan and the Real (in Swedish)
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\nCatherine Christer Hennix\, “Untitled (Les quatre discours)”\, ca 1990s. Photo: Ben DeHaan. Courtesy Blank Forms\, New York.\n\n\nWorkshop: Hennix\, Lacan and the Real (in Swedish)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased on the ongoing exhibition with CC Hennix\, Malmö Konsthall invites you to a workshop with researcher and Lacan scholar Ervik Cejvan. How can we understand reality through and beyond language? And how can art generate new ways of looking at meaning? \n\n\n\nCC Hennix’s artistic practice is both multi-layered and philosophically profound. As an artist\, musician and mathematician\, she was drawn to questions relating to the nature of knowledge and consciousness. During the 1990s\, she became interested in the ideas of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan\, including his “mathème” – a set of symbols and formulas that he developed as a pedagogical tool for formalising and presenting the psychoanalytic teaching. She was also drawn to his later work\, where he used topological models (such as the Möbius strip) to illustrate the theories on a more direct and intuitive level. \n\n\n\nThe workshop introduces elements of Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory in CC Hennix’s works at Malmö Konsthall. We will gather in the Workshop for a short lecture\, followed by a tour of the exhibition and a practical part where we elaborate on Hennix’s and Lacan’s intuitive methods. What dimensions are unlocked when we break through the symbolic and imaginary formations of understanding? \n\n\n\nThe workshop is led by Ervik Cejvan\, researcher in Philosophy of Religion at Lund University. His own research explores questions of exaggeration\, excess and transgression at the intersection between philosophy\, art\, psychoanalysis and spirituality. He has previously collaborated with\, among others\, Institutet\, Alltet and Aning – Förening för Filosofi och Psykoanalys. \n\n\n\nRead more about the exhibition here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: WorkshopWhen: Wednesday\, 13 May\, 17:30–19:00Where: The Workshop \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAdmission free\, drop in \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErvik Cejvan\, researcher in Philosophy of Religion at Lund University.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Christer Hennix\, “Bichromatic Tangle of Topological Space Curves”\, 1993/2026. This will be the largest presentation of her work in Scandinavia and her first show ever in the south of Sweden. \n\n\n\nSince the early 2000s\, Bouchra Khalili has been working with a wide variety of media\, including installation\, film\, photography\, printmaking and textile. In her work\, she addresses issues related to belonging\, community\, and democracy. At Malmö Konsthall\, Khalili will let the works go in dialogue with the building’s existing architecture by creating a site-specific presentation. Newer works will meet older ones and together form a chorus of voices\, where forgotten stories from the past are brought to light and resonate in our own time. \n\n\n\n18:00 Restaurant/Bar SMAK opens 19:00–24:00 Opening with welcome speeches\, live music\, workshop\, and DJ22:00 The exhibition closes24:00 SMAK closes \n\n\n\nCo-hosts of the opening event: Hand i Hand\, Irakiska Kulturföreningen\, and Svensk-Algeriska FöreningenThanks to ABF Malmö. \n\n\n\nWarm welcome! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: Opening receptionWhen: Friday\, June 5 at 7:00 PMWhere: The Exhibition Hall and Restaurant SMAK \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAdmission free\, drop in \n\n\n\nRead more about the exhibition here. \n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition is supported by Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art and Institut français.

SUMMARY:Panel discussion: The Upheaval
DESCRIPTION:Start\nEvents\n\n \n \n\nCollage by Christina Neuss. \n\n\nPanel discussion: The Upheaval\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2025\, choreographer Philippe Blanchard\, dramaturg Maika Knoblich\, and Skånes Dansteater initiated an ongoing exploratory project on how performing arts practitioners can take a more active and responsible role in addressing the ecological crisis. In this panel discussion\, they invite the audience to jointly explore what art can communicate and offer in times of crisis that other disciplines may not. The discussion will be held in English. \n\n\n\nIn a time when the climate crisis is accelerating\, their questions move beyond emissions data toward a critical reflection on the ethical dimensions of our methods\, the infrastructures that support them\, and the symbolic economies within which they circulate. In this context\, they are developing a dance work based on philosopher Édouard Glissant’s concept of opacity. In their research\, they ask: Can we imagine artistic practices that embody such an ethics—practices that do not seek to extract or explain\, but to relate\, resonate\, and respond? \n\n\n\nParticipants: Philippe Blanchard (FR)\, lecturer\, educator\, curator and artist working with sustainable methodologies in performative practice; Max Liljefors\, Professor of Art History and Visual Studies at Lund University; Lucy Smalley\, project manager at KOAS\, Malmö Konsthall. \n\n\n\nModerator: Maika Knoblich (DE)\, performance artist\, choreographer\, and lighting designer. \n\n\n\nThe conversation is part of the democracy week “Malmö Möts”. Read more here. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation\n\n\n\nWhat: Panel discussionWhen: Saturday 13 June\, 2–3 pmWhere: C–salen \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAdmission free\, drop in
